8.5 Billion Straws
Conservative figures in the UK suggest that in fast food restaurants there are around 8.5 billion straws used and discarded every year, this doesn't include straws used at home, in bars, street vendors etc.
it can take upto 500 years for a standard plastic straw to degrade, and even when it eventually does, it merely breaks down into micro particles of plastic which enevitably end up in the ecosystem forever.
When you walk around the streets of your home town it won't take you very long to see straws strewn in the gutters, doorways and green areas.
We as consumers are in a unique position to dictate which straws we find acceptable. We can make a difference straight away by refusing to use any straws that are not Biodegradable.
